Aikido - mind/body harmony - self defense

One source said that aikido is hard to describe, but that it's frustrating trying to fight an aikidoist. That's a pretty good goal for students.

Modern aikido was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (O Sensei, 1883-1969), continued by his son, and is now presided over by his grandson. It was derived from Daito Ryu Aiki-jutsu, and to a lesser extent, from other Japanese martial arts.

Curriculum: emphasis on basics - hand-to-hand techniques (taijutsu), falling (ukemi waza), fitness and flexibility. Step-by-step instruction (kihon waza). Stick (jo) and wood sword (bokken) are integral parts of the art, but not essential for beginners. They are helpful for independent study at an intermediate level.

The Chinese characters for aikido and Hapkido are the same, but the emphasis of training in each art is different and complementary.
